A professionally applied ceramic coating makes your car easier to clean, helps maintain its gloss and provides a sacrificial layer between environmental contamination and the factory paintwork.
However, ceramic coating does not mean your car never needs to be washed again.
The coating will continue protecting the paint, but regular maintenance helps it perform at its best. It also keeps the vehicle looking cleaner, glossier and more hydrophobic for longer.
At GenTek, we do not place customers under a complicated or restrictive maintenance program. Our advice is simple: wash the car regularly, remove contamination as soon as reasonably possible and use washing methods that reduce the risk of scratching the paint.
This guide explains how to properly maintain a ceramic or graphene-coated vehicle based on our experience applying paint protection to vehicles across Sydney.
What Are the Biggest Ceramic Coating Maintenance Mistakes?
The biggest mistake we see is simply not washing the vehicle regularly.
When dirt, road grime, minerals and environmental contamination are allowed to build up, they can begin covering the surface of the coating. This may reduce its gloss, slickness and water-beading performance.
Another common mistake is using poor washing techniques that introduce scratches or swirl marks.
Ceramic coating helps protect the paint against environmental damage, but it does not make the vehicle completely scratch-proof. Dirty sponges, old chamois, contaminated wash mitts and harsh automatic brushes can still mark the surface.
The goal of proper maintenance is not just to preserve the coating. It is also to protect the appearance of the paintwork underneath it.
How Often Should You Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car?
The ideal washing frequency depends on where the vehicle is stored and how it is used.
For a vehicle that is regularly parked outside, especially overnight, we generally recommend washing it weekly or fortnightly. Outdoor vehicles are exposed to more dust, tree sap, bird and bat droppings, insects, rain residue and airborne contamination.
For a vehicle that is normally kept inside a garage overnight, washing it every two to three weeks may be sufficient.
These are practical recommendations rather than strict rules. A car that is driven daily, parked under trees or regularly used on freeways may need to be washed more frequently than a lightly used weekend vehicle.
The main objective is to prevent contamination from remaining on the surface for extended periods.
Can You Take a Ceramic-Coated Car Through a Car Wash?
With GenTek coatings, customers are not restricted to washing their cars at home.
Professional tunnel washes, touchless laser washes and reputable hand car washes are generally suitable for our coating. Our product has undergone chemical resistance testing, including testing through the CSIRO, and can resist chemicals up to pH 14.
Many commercial car wash chemicals used in Australia only reach approximately pH 9, which is well within the coating’s tested chemical resistance.
However, we do not recommend the cheaper rollover brush machines commonly found at petrol stations.
These machines may use brushes that have contacted many dirty vehicles throughout the day. Dirt and grit trapped in the brushes can then be dragged across the paintwork, potentially creating swirl marks and fine scratches.
The concern is usually not whether the car wash will remove the coating. The bigger concern is whether the washing equipment may physically mark the surface.
The Best Way to Wash a Ceramic-Coated Car at Home
You do not need professional detailing equipment to properly maintain a coated vehicle.
Start by thoroughly rinsing the car to remove as much loose dirt and sediment as possible. A pressure washer is ideal, but a garden hose with a strong spray attachment can also work.
Where possible, use a foam cannon or pre-wash product to help loosen dirt before making physical contact with the paint.
Once the loose contamination has been removed, wash the vehicle using a clean microfibre wash mitt rather than a traditional sponge.
Old-style yellow sponges can trap dirt against their flat surface. As the sponge is moved across the vehicle, that trapped dirt may be dragged along the paint and create swirl marks.
A good wash mitt allows dirt to move deeper into its fibres, reducing the amount of contamination being pushed directly across the surface.
Why We Recommend the Two-Bucket Wash Method
The two-bucket method is one of the simplest ways to reduce the chance of scratching your car during a home wash.
One bucket contains your clean soapy water. The second bucket contains clean rinse water.
After washing a section of the car, rinse the mitt in the clean water before placing it back into the soap bucket. This helps remove dirt from the mitt instead of transferring that contamination into your clean wash water.
We also recommend using grit guards at the bottom of the buckets.
The grit guard allows dirt and sediment to settle below the section where the mitt is being rinsed. This reduces the likelihood of the wash mitt picking the same contamination back up and returning it to the vehicle.
What Should You Use to Dry the Car?
We no longer recommend traditional chamois for drying coated vehicles.
A chamois often requires pressure and repeated wiping across the paint. If any dirt remains on the surface, that wiping motion can introduce fine scratches.
Instead, use a large, clean microfibre drying towel.
Allow the towel to do the work rather than pressing heavily into the paint. You can place or spread the towel over the panel and gently pull it across the surface, allowing the fibres to absorb the water.
Because a ceramic coating creates a hydrophobic surface, the remaining water should be relatively easy to collect with a quality drying towel.
Specialty car dryers are another useful option. These machines use filtered, warm air to blow water away from badges, mirrors, grilles, door handles and other areas that may be difficult to reach with a towel.
Are There Any Products You Should Avoid?
GenTek coatings are designed to be chemically resistant, so customers are not limited to one specific brand of car shampoo or maintenance product.
A quality automotive wash soap is generally suitable.
However, we would avoid unnecessarily aggressive acid-based cleaners, particularly if they are not designed for use across vehicle paintwork.
The wash method is often more important than the exact shampoo being used. A safe product can still produce poor results if it is combined with a dirty sponge, excessive pressure or contaminated drying equipment.
Clean tools and careful contact are the key priorities.
How Should You Remove Bird Droppings, Tree Sap and Insects?
Bird droppings, bat droppings, tree sap and insect residue should be removed as soon as reasonably possible.
The longer these contaminants remain on the vehicle, the more opportunity they have to affect the surface.
A ceramic coating acts as a sacrificial protective layer. This means environmental contamination encounters the coating before it reaches the factory paint system underneath.
However, the presence of a protective coating does not mean contamination should be deliberately left on the car. Regular washing and prompt removal provide the best chance of preventing permanent damage.
If damage does occur to the protected surface and the incident is covered under the GenTek warranty program, we can arrange for a technician to assess the affected area. Where applicable, the area can be machine polished and the coating reapplied at no cost under the warranty terms.
What Does It Mean When the Water Stops Beading?
One of the biggest misconceptions in the ceramic coating industry is that reduced water beading automatically means the coating has failed.
In many cases, the coating is still present and performing its protective role. The reduced beading is caused by contamination sitting on top of the coating.
Minerals, road grime, dirt and other residue can build up across the vehicle’s surface. Water is then interacting with that contamination rather than directly with the coating underneath it.
This can make the paint feel rougher and reduce the visible hydrophobic effect.
A proper decontamination wash can remove this buildup and expose the coating again. Once the contamination has been removed, the water beading and hydrophobic behaviour will often return.
The coating does not necessarily disappear simply because the water behaviour has changed.
When Does a Coated Car Need a Decontamination Wash?
There is no fixed timeframe that applies to every vehicle.
A car kept outside and washed infrequently will usually develop contamination sooner than a garage-kept vehicle that receives regular maintenance.
A deeper decontamination clean may be worthwhile when the paint begins to feel rough, dirt becomes more difficult to remove or the water-beading performance noticeably decreases.
Depending on the level and type of contamination, this process may include a specialist decontamination wash and clay bar treatment.
Clay barring should be performed carefully because improper technique can mark the paint. For heavily contaminated vehicles, having the process completed by a professional is usually the safer option.
Once the contamination has been removed, the gloss, smoothness and hydrophobic properties of the coating should become more noticeable again.
Does Mileage Affect Ceramic Coating Maintenance?
Mileage alone does not determine when a vehicle needs deeper maintenance. The type of driving is often more important.
Vehicles that spend significant time on freeways can collect more insects, road film and grime. Long road trips through country or rural areas may also expose the car to more insects and environmental contamination than normal city driving.
If you have completed a long road trip, it is a good idea to wash the vehicle soon after returning rather than allowing the contamination to remain on the surface.
Frequent highway drivers may also benefit from slightly more regular washing, particularly across the front bumper, bonnet, mirrors and windscreen surrounds.
What If You Do Not Have a Pressure Washer or Garage?
A ceramic-coated vehicle can still be properly maintained without a pressure washer, garage or professional wash bay.
A garden hose can be used to remove loose dirt before washing. A deionising or waterless pre-wash product may also help soften and break down dirt, provided it is used according to its instructions.
You can then use the two-bucket method with a clean wash mitt and automotive shampoo.
The most important step is to avoid wiping heavy, dry dirt directly across the surface. Always remove or soften as much loose contamination as possible before physically washing the car.
A large microfibre drying towel can then be used to dry the vehicle safely.
Does Good Maintenance Really Make a Difference?
Yes.
The coating will continue acting as a sacrificial protective layer, but regular washing makes a major difference to how the vehicle looks and how clearly its hydrophobic properties can be seen.
A well-maintained coated vehicle will generally retain its shine, depth and smoothness for longer because contamination is not being allowed to build up across the surface.
By comparison, a coated vehicle that is rarely washed may begin looking duller or less hydrophobic, even though the coating is still present underneath the contamination.
Maintenance supports appearance. The coating supports protection.
These two things work together, but they are not the same thing.
Our Golden Rule for Ceramic Coating Maintenance
If you look after the car by washing it regularly and maintaining its cleanliness, the coating will look after the vehicle by doing what it was designed to do.
You do not need a complicated detailing schedule or a cupboard full of specialist chemicals.
Wash the car regularly, use safe equipment, remove contamination promptly and arrange a deeper decontamination clean when buildup begins affecting the surface.
That is the most practical way to keep your vehicle protected, glossy and easier to maintain for years to come.
